To ease parking congestion in Khan Market, New Delhi Municipal: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: To ease parking congestion in Khan Market, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is soon likely to table a proposal at its council meeting for constructing an underground multi-level parking facility.

Traders said they have been demanding a multi-level parking facility for the past 15 years. “In 2011, Delhi HC instructed NDMC to build a lot on a plot opposite Bible Bhavan and allocate its tender.

However, the plan remained on paper,” said Sanjiv Mehra, president of the association. “Though the council completed the process to buy a 5,000 sqm plot worth Rs 14 crore from CPWD in 2011, a disagreement over a few square metres delayed the matter,” Mehra said. The issue was discussed during a meeting of members of Khan Market Traders’ Association with MP Bansuri Swaraj and NDMC chairman Manoj Dwivedi Monday. A one-acre site, which has been identified for the purpose, is located opposite Bible Bhavan on Amrita Shergill Marg. Dwivedi reportedly asked the architecture department to retrieve old drawings and rework the project.

After its approval, public suggestions will be invited before it is sent to the ministry for notification,” said an official. The traders also raised the issue of the unit area method (UAM), which is pending for implementation months after Jan Vishwas Bill came into effect. “They were informed that the proposal has been vetted by Delhi department law department and has been sent to UD department. Traders from Sarojini Nagar, who were also present at the meeting, demanded a standard plan for their buildings, which has been pending with NDMC for a long time. Download the TOI App.
