The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Hyderabad: A six-year-old girl was found dead with her mother after the woman allegedly tied the child to her waist and jumped into an agricultural well in Lingapur village of Dandepalli mandal on Sunday morning.

The deceased were identified as Gotla Rajitha, 26, and her daughter Akshitha , 6. The couple had two children — Akshitha and 18-month-old Mahender.

Rajitha was married to Merugu Anjaiah of Venugumatla in Jagtial district seven years ago, according to Dandepalli sub-inspector G Rajavardhan. The incident came to light after passersby noticed the bodies floating in the well and alerted the family. Rajitha and Anjaiah had reportedly been having marital disputes, following which she had been staying with her parents in Lingapur for some time. Anjaiah would occasionally visit to meet the children. Police were alerted and the bodies were retrieved from the well. A case has been registered and further investigation is under way to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.

Anjaiah reportedly arrived at the house as usual, spent some time with the children and left. Soon after he left, Rajitha put her son to sleep and took Akshitha with her towards an agricultural well near the village. She allegedly tied Akshitha to her waist before jumping into the well. Passersby later noticed the bodies and alerted the family.

On Sunday morning, Rajitha’s parents left home for work.
