Hyderabad: Congress was trying to “blackmail” the Election Commission of India (ECI) out of fear of defeat, Telangana BJP chief spokesperson NV Subhash alleged on Monday. Reacting to the Congress’ protest rally at Necklace Road seeking the resignation of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Subhash said the party was targeting an independent constitutional institution after its allegations of “vote theft” and “seat theft”.
He described the rally as a reflection of Congress’ “political frustration” and said the party was attempting to intimidate the poll panel. Subhash said the Supreme Court had upheld the SIR process and that the ECI had extended the deadline for filing claims and objections. Instead of making allegations, Congress leaders should use the process available to raise their concerns, he said. He said the Congress was using the protests to divert attention from its failure to implement the six guarantees promised to people.
He pointed out that while BJP workers were being arrested for raising public issues, police remained silent when the Congress organised protests against the ECI. Subhash also questioned the Congress’ commitment to democracy while the party was allegedly inducting MLAs from other parties.
