HYDERABAD: The Telangana Gazette has formally notified the disqualification of Danam Nagender as MLA from the 60-Khairatabad Assembly constituency, following the Telangana High Court judgment dated September 18, 2026.
The notification, published in the Telangana Gazette on September 26, states that Nagender stands disqualified as a member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly with effect from April 23, 2024, under Paragraph 2(1)(a) of the Tenth Schedule read with Article 191(2) of the Constitution. 8409 and 8647 of 2026. The high court had disqualified Nagender after holding that he had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Secunderabad as a Congress candidate while being a BRS MLA. The Gazette notification now formally records Nagender’s disqualification and the vacancy of the Khairatabad Assembly seat with effect from April 23, 2024. Consequently, the Khairatabad Assembly seat stands vacant from the same date, news agency ANI reported. The court also set aside the Assembly Speaker’s decision dismissing petitions seeking his disqualification, ANI reported. The notification, issued by Telangana Legislative Assembly Secretary Rendla Thirupathi, was issued pursuant to the high court judgment in writ petitions Nos. The Supreme Court subsequently upheld the high court order, dismissing Nagender’s plea challenging his disqualification. The apex court held that there was no ground to interfere with the high court’s order. Reacting to the Supreme Court verdict, Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao had described it as a victory for democracy and constitutional morality. He demanded that MLAs who had joined the Congress resign and seek a fresh mandate through by-elections. Download the TOI App.
