Hyderabad : A 49-year-old private employee from Qutbiguda lost close to ₹8 lakh in a bogus buyback scheme involving an old ₹1 currency note. Following the victim’s complaint, Hyderabad cybercrime police booked a cheating case.
The complainant alleged that on Sept 20, he clicked on a social media advertisement claiming that an old Indian one-rupee note could fetch ₹45 lakh. Between Sept 20 and 23, the complainant transferred over ₹7.9 lakh. After I shared photographs of the note along with my personal details to the contact number provided in the ad, I was asked to make a series of payments towards release fees, taxes and RBI clearances,” the complainant said. “I have an old one-rupee currency note. A fraudster posing as a DSP with the cybercrime police in Andhra Pradesh contacted the victim and threatened to initiate legal action against the latter for allegedly engaging in sale of black money. On the purported DSP’s instructions, he made further payments. As the fraudsters kept asking for more money, the victim realised that he had been duped and approached the police.
