I have lost count of the number of times I have opened Instagram intending to check one message and ended up watching a video of an impossibly muscular cat, a toddler behaving like a tiny action hero or an animal doing something physically impossible in real life. I know within seconds that it is AI-generated. I know it is ridiculous. I still watch.
That is the strange power of AI slop. It does not have to be good to hold attention. It just has to be strange enough to make the brain ask: What am I looking at? The internet has always rewarded the bizarre, but generative AI has made bizarre content almost limitless. Creators can produce endless variations of the same surreal premise, see what gets clicks and make more. Algorithms thrive on that curiosity, turning every swipe into another tiny surprise — and another reason not to stop. There is no narrative to follow and often no real payoff. The reward is the next surprise. One absurd clip becomes a dozen, and a quick scroll can quietly turn into half an hour. But the endless supply comes at a cost. Generating AI content requires computing power, which consumes energy and, depending on the system and its cooling needs, water. One nonsensical video may seem harmless; billions of generations are harder to dismiss. The irony is that knowing all this rarely makes the thumb stop. AI slop does not need to convince us that it is worth watching. It only needs to convince us to watch one more.
