Mobis India Foundation supported independent mobility by distributing customized wheelchairs to 60 beneficiaries in West Bengal

KOLKATA: A corporate social responsibility programme has strengthened independent mobility for persons with disabilities in West Bengal by providing personalised mobility devices to 60 wheelchair users across Kolkata and Siliguri. The Kolkata phase saw 32 beneficiaries receive customised assistive devices from Mobis India Foundation, the CSR arm of Hyundai Mobis in India, following support extended earlier to 28 beneficiaries in Siliguri. The West Bengal outreach is part of Mobis India Foundation’s Rs 6.3-crore national accessibility programme supporting 600 wheelchair users across eight states and union territories.

For many persons with locomotor disabilities and spinal cord injuries, everyday movement is closely linked to access to education, employment, healthcare, public services, sports and community life. By offering mobility solutions designed around individual needs, the initiative seeks to reduce physical barriers and support dignity, confidence and participation. Each beneficiary underwent clinical assessment and detailed body measurement to ensure proper posture, comfort, safety and long-term usability. The NeoFly wheelchair, customised to the user’s clinical and functional requirements, can be paired with NeoBolt, a motor-powered attachment that helps users cover longer distances with less physical effort. This approach moves beyond conventional one-size-fits-all distribution and places the person at the centre of design. Implemented with NeoMotion, an assistive technology company incubated at IIT Madras, the programme reflects a long-term commitment to inclusion and equal opportunity. The Kolkata event was attended by officials from the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities and Mobis India Foundation representatives from Hyundai Mobis. Download the TOI App.
