Kolkata: Seven persons were arrested following a wave of assaults on on-duty police personnel, sexual harassment, and armed intimidation that marred Durga Puja immersion proceedings across Kolkata over the past 72 hours. At Gwalior Ghat, a group of 20 tried to participate in immersion proceedings instead of the designated five. Incidents were reported from Gwalior Ghat, Shib Krishna Daw Lane and Motijheel Bridge.

When stopped by cops, the group turned violent, attacking police personnel and home guards while sexually harassing female cops. After the immersion, the group vandalised the police camp at the ghat and injured five personnel. Four of the immersion group were arrested and a court sent them to police custody until Tuesday. In another incident, a post-immersion brawl erupted near Shib Krishna Daw Lane between rival factions led by Indar Yadav and Satish Mahato. When cops ordered them to disperse, the mob pelted bricks and broken tiles at them. Yadav allegedly drew a firearm and threatened to fire while hurling abuse at the police, before fleeing. At Motijheel Bridge, sergeant Bikash Majumder was allegedly attacked by three persons — Md Takique Arfin, Sk Niazuddin and Md Imran — and sustained injuries. Cops arrested all three suspects from Chhatu Babu Lane.
