Nandigram: A Contai court on Wednesday remanded Congress Nandigram bypoll candidate Milan Pradhan in judicial custody till Oct 7 — the day after voting — in connection with a 2007 criminal case. Mukherjee explained: “All Nandigram land acquisition cases were initially withdrawn by the Trinamool govt under Section 321 of the CrPC. However, in Feb 2025, a Calcutta High Court division bench set aside the withdrawal of cases involving murder charges and ordered fresh probes. That is why it is trying to frame people in unjust, 20-year-old cases. Pradhan’s arrest on Sept 18 came hours after Mamata Banerjee announced that her faction of Trinamool Congress would support the Congress candidate. Pradhan was implicated in an additional case despite the additional advocate general previously assuring the court that no other cases were pending against him, Pradhan’s lawyers said. Immediately after the order, Pradhan’s legal team approached the bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya in Calcutta High Court, seeking an urgent hearing. Pradhan, meanwhile, moved a bail application before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh. Senior advocate Milon Mukherjee noted: “The matter is likely to be heard this week. The five cases in which Pradhan was arrested fall under this specific subset.
