Kolkata: A controversy has erupted in North Dum Dum after a notice announcing cancellation of a popular Durga Puja went viral on social media. The puja committee alleged that repeated attacks by outsiders, vandalism, and administrative inaction have forced it to call off this year’s celebrations.
The committee of Uttar Dum Dum 14 Palli Sarbojanin Durgotsav, organised by Birati Tarun Sangha Club in Block II of Mahajatinagar, has decided not to hold its 76th puja this year. Haldar alleged that around 40-50 bike-borne youths attacked the club on July 23 and demanded all documents related to the club and puja. She said the group returned on Aug 16 and attacked club and puja committee members.

Repeated attacks, vandalism at the club, assaults on senior members of the club and puja committee, and a lack of administrative cooperation were among the reasons for the decision, according to the notice. Club president Swapan Haldar said they had lodged a complaint with cops but received no cooperation. Download the TOI App.
