The PIL, filed by Avratanu Sarkar, had sought action against Banerjee for allegedly “threatening national security”. Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty had earlier questioned the maintainability of the PIL, observing that PILs were increasingly used as “special tools or weapons”. The state filed a report before Chief Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge and Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty stating that Banerjee’s comments did not have any element of a cognisable offence. The petitioner alleged that her remarks went beyond inflammatory speech and had implications for India’s sovereignty, national security and foreign interests. Several FIRs have subsequently been lodged, invoking provisions including sedition and the Official Secrets Act. Download the TOI App.
Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Wednesday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against former chief minister Mamata Banerjee over her alleged comments on the murder of Bangladesh activist Sharif Osman Bin Hadi .
