Kolkata: In a major civic initiative aimed at addressing the long-standing waterlogging problem in Behala West assembly constituency, the state govt has taken up comprehensive dredging of Parnasree canal.
The impact will be felt particularly in parts of wards 129 and 130, where the drainage network carries stormwater towards Parnasree canal outfall. In ward 131, the canal originates from Behala Parnasree Road and passes through the ward and subsequently enters Maheshtala municipality’s Ward 13, where it merges with Monikhali canal. We are hopeful that the move will curb waterlogging to a reasonable extent,” said Ranita Das, a resident of ward 131.
Improving the flow through this system is therefore important for residents living along its route as well as those dependent on the connected drainage network. The initiative is particularly significant for residents of Behala Paschim,” state youth services and sports minister Indranil Khan, who represents Behala West constituency, said. The dredging will improve the canal’s water-carrying capacity and speed up the discharge of stormwater from neighbourhoods linked to its drainage network. The network runs through Netaji Subhas Road, Sarat Chatterjee Road, Brahmo Samaj Road and Khudiram Bose Sarani, before reaching Behala Flying Club pumping station. “The dredging is intended to restore the canal’s water-carrying capacity. The last time dredging of the canal was taken up was five years back, and over time, the accumulation of silt and other materials has reduced the effective depth and carrying capacity of the canal, potentially slowing down the drainage of rainwater. “Every time after a smart shower, there is water accumulation, and sometimes it is prolonged; that affects pedestrians and road traffic.
