Sabana Ajmi (22) from Murshidabad’s Nabagram qualified for constable post in West Bengal Police exam of 2024 but her verification was not completed allegedly on the ground that her father’s name was deleted from the list. But her name was part of the 2026 SIR list and she had also casted her vote. Justice Rao on Oct 15 ordered the Deputy Inspector General of Police to verify her candidature and appoint her if she is eligible.

“It is made clear that in case the name of the father of the petitioner is not included in the voter list by the adjudicating authority or Appellate Tribunal, the respondent authorities are at liberty to take appropriate steps for cancellation of the order of appointment of the petitioner in accordance with law,” Justice Rao ordered. Kolkata: Calcutta High Court recently directed for provisional appointment and training of four successful West Bengal Police constable candidates–whose names, either own or parents, were deleted in SIR and appeal is pending, with a rider that authorities can cancel their appointments if either they or their parents are not included in the voter list after Appellate Tribunal hearing. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) cases, where people are approaching High Court seeking expedite hearing by Appellate Tribunal citing instances where their appointments or counselling in competitive exams or passport issuance has been put on hold till their appeals against exclusion from voter list is sorted, are being heard by single bench of Justice Krishna Rao.

In her case, too, she was allowed on Oct 13 but the rider remained that her appointment can be cancelled if her name doesn’t feature in the voter list even after the appellate tribunal’s hearing. Daliya’s counsel senior advocate Samim Ahamed argued that she may be given provisional appointment so that she can go for training.
