Darjeeling Chowrasta’s iconic fountain
Darjeeling : After remaining clogged and non-functional for months, the 141-year-old fountain at Darjeeling’s Chowrasta – one of the most photographed spots in the hill town – is set to get a new lease of life. Ahead of peak tourist season, the GTA tourism department has taken up restoration work of the fountain unveiled in 1885 by Maharaja of Cooch Behar Nripendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur.
The restoration is expected to be completed within a week, said GTA officials. Grain leftovers strewn around often obstruct the fountain, said officials. Dawa Gyalpo Sherpa, field director of the GTA tourism department, said restoration work is currently under way and is expected to be completed within a week. Tourists should not feed birds here,” said Dawa Gyalpo Sherpa, field director of GTA tourism department.
“The restoration will be a festive gift. The work will be completed within a week. The fountain is an iconic structure of historical importance to the Darjeeling Hills, and we want to ensure that it does not once again become a dormant feature of the Mall.
