Kolkata: A 26-year-old man from East Sapuipara in Howrah’s Nischinda area, Shankar Mishra, was arrested for driving his SUV on to a crowded pavement teeming with Diwali shoppers on Kalakar Street around 10.55 am on Wednesday, injuring two pedestrians, hitting a roadside stall and dislodging a bust of Rajiv Gandhi. The two injured individuals — Arabinda Chandra (75) from Ahiritala Street in Jorabagan and Sarwan Bazaz (37) from Ganguly Lane in Posta — were taken to Shree Vishudhanand Hospital. Cops said Mishra had been driving drunk and had lost control of the car.
The SUV rammed an electric scooter before mounting the pavement, according to witnesses. Bazaz sustained minor injuries and was discharged after treatment while Chandra remains hospitalised with fractures.
