HC rejects Indranil's anticipatory bail plea in massArt case

Indranil Sen

“The state’s claim that petitioner has abused his official position while discharging his duties, at this stage, cannot be ruled out. …if the investigating agency has been able to unearth an offence, it is the duty of the agency to carry out the investigation. There are trappings of corruption, as govt money was diverted through a tender process which has enriched the petitioner and his family members. Petitioner was at the helm of affairs and was primarily responsible being a govt servant i.e. the minister of information and cultural affairs department,” the judge observed. In the Chandannagar extortion case, Justice Ghosh noted that Sen’s name had surfaced through statements of co-accused and no material established a money transfer to him. The court directed Sen to report to the investigating officer whenever required.

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Thursday rejected the anticipatory bail plea by former state minister Indranil Sen in a Bowbazar case over misappropriation of preview show tickets, observing that he was “at the helm of affairs and responsible” being a govt servant. In another Chandannagar case, the court granted him anticipatory bail, observing that Sen’s custodial interrogation was not needed. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh heard both cases.
