A Durga puja pandal on CIT Road
The Puja will open on Oct 14, so we barely have a week’s time to complete the work,” said Abhishek De Biswas, spokesperson for Deshapriya Park Durgotsab. A shade has been built outside the pandal so that visitors can take shelter if it rains. Installations that were to be made of cloth are now being made with plywood, said Anik Acharya, secretary of Bhagabati Park Sarbojanin Durga Puja. “The rain is slowing down the work, but we do not want to take any chances,” said Bikash Majumdar, chief organiser of College Square Sarbojanin Durgotsab Committee. Kolkata : A day after an intense thundershower lashed parts of the city, Wednesday’s rain forced Durga Puja organisers to step up efforts to protect pandals, installations and workers, with barely a week left for several pujas to open. Committees have covered outdoor areas, halted work during showers, shifted materials and taken extra precautions before electricians resume work as wet and slippery conditions make preparations difficult. The rain is also complicating the transportation of idols from Kumartuli to various pandals across the city. Completed idols are being wrapped in plastic sheets to protect them while being moved through the city. However, idol-makers say the process becomes difficult if paint has not dried properly, as the idols need to be protected from rain while also being handled carefully. At Deshapriya Park Durgotsab, rain has slowed the pace of work as organisers covered parts of the venue to prevent damage. Decorators have been asked to work carefully, with the safety of workers taking priority. Work on the lighting is underway and organisers have ensured that the electrical meter is kept in a safe place. The area is also being dried before electricians begin work to reduce risks in the wet conditions. “The rain is slowing down the pace of the work. We have covered some of the area to prevent any damage from the rain. The decorators are working carefully, prioritising the safety of the workers. At Bhagabati Park Sarbojanin near Diamond Plaza on Jessore Road, organisers have gone a step further to prepare for the possibility of rain during the festival. The committee has also altered some of the materials planned for outdoor installations. At several pujas being organised in parks and open grounds, rain has left the surface slippery, prompting committees to place wooden planks to facilitate movement. In Kumartuli, idol-makers are also taking precautions as the final stages of painting and finishing coincide with the wet weather. Download the TOI App.
At College Square, preparations were halted on Tuesday evening and Wednesday.
