Kolkata: A 26-year-old woman from Dum Dum was found dead in bed, with a scarf around her neck, at her in-laws’ house in Barasat on Wednesday morning, barely three months after her wedding. Her husband Prosenjit Bose was arrested.
Based on the family’s complaint, police detained Prosenjit and began questioning him. Investigators are examining whether Riya died by suicide or was killed, and no conclusion has been reached yet. Police sent the body for post-mortem examination at Barasat Hospital. However, Riya’s mother demanded that the post-mortem be conducted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital instead. An argument reportedly broke out between her and police personnel on the hospital premises over the issue.
Riya had eloped with Prosenjit despite opposition from her family in July, according to sources. On reaching there, she found Riya lying motionless in a bed with a scarf around her neck,” a relative said.
Riya Debnath, an employee of a private firm, was allegedly tortured after she confronted her husband about him being married twice earlier, a fact he had allegedly concealed from her. She also claimed that the family later came to know that Prosenjit had been married twice earlier and that Riya had faced harassment after learning about his previous marriages. A quarrel had broken out between the couple late on Tuesday night, according to Riya’s family. “After learning about the dispute, Riya’s mother travelled from Dum Dum to Riya’s in-laws’ house on Wednesday morning.
Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and the forensic evidence,” an officer said. “We are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death.
