Kolkata: A proposed Mahakal temple at Matigara in Siliguri, for which the foundation stone was laid in Jan this year by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee , is set to be replaced by Mahakal Yoga Centre. The proposed centre will come up on the same land opposite Uttarayan township, near Matigara, where the previous govt had planned to construct one of the country’s tallest Mahakal temples. “You cannot construct a temple like this with govt money. The temple site will now have a state-of-the-art yoga centre. Ayush department will execute the project. A large statue of Lord Shiva is also planned at the site, with arrangements for yoga sessions in front of the statue. The area is also proposed to be landscaped with trees to create a shaded and tranquil environment. The ministry may establish its North Bengal headquarters in the vicinity, potentially expanding the region’s ayurveda-related healthcare infrastructure.
The state cabinet on Wednesday approved the project for the yoga centre, where several hundred people can practise yoga at the same time.
