Biswajit Das after his arrest on Monday
Kolkata: Former Trinamool MLA Biswajit Das, also president of the party’s Bongaon organisational district in North 24 Parganas, was arrested on Monday for allegedly possessing an illegal firearm. He first represented TMC and later won the 2021 assembly election on a BJP ticket before returning to TMC a few months after becoming a BJP MLA from Bagdah constituency. In 2024, he was appointed president of TMC’s Bongaon district. “He resigned as MLA to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha election on a TMC ticket from Bongaon parliamentary constituency but lost. He also contested the latest assembly election in 2026 as a TMC candidate from Bongaon North but was defeated by BJP’s Ashok Kirtaniya,” a senior TMC functionary said.
Police said they received a tip-off that Das was carrying a firearm. He was arrested on charges of illegal possession of arms,” a senior officer of Bongaon police said. “His car was searched in the Gopalnagar market area, where police recovered a firearm. Das had been elected twice as Trinamool MLA from Bongaon North.
“Recently, he met state leader of the opposition Ritabrata Banerjee and referred to him as ‘my neta’,” the TMC functionary added. Reacting to Das’s arrest, BJP MLA from Habra Debdas Mondal said: “He should have been arrested much earlier. A former Bongaon councillor alleged that Das had “tormented” people while serving as an MLA and district TMC president and accused him of practising “bomb and gun politics”.
