Kolkata: The local MLA and Kolkata Police stepped in on Tuesday to assure organisers of the 61-year-old puja by the Ajeya Sanghati club in Haridevpur of security after the club members threatened to stop preparations for this year’s puja in the wake of an alleged attack and vandalism on the club premises on Sunday night.
The police said that an investigation is underway. “We are doing whatever is needful,” said an officer from Haridevpur Police. The police, on its part, deployed three cops at the spot as a protection though no one has been arrested yet. During the incident, three of our club members were also physically attacked, causing serious concern among all associated with our puja preparations. They also took our CCTV cameras & DVR of the cameras causing damage to property and creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among our members. …Such actions have deeply disturbed the peaceful environment required for the smooth conduct of our Durga Puja celebrations. There is a genuine apprehension that further acts of vandalism, intimidation, or disturbance may occur, adversely affecting the ongoing work as well as public safety. In view of the above, we humbly request you to provide necessary police protection and patrolling around our club premises and the pandal area. Ensure the safety and security of the artists, craftsmen, labours, and volunteers engaged in the preparation work. Finally, take appropriate action against the miscreants involved in the incident of vandalism,” stated the club.
Club secretary Pijush Halder had lodged the complaint on Monday night.
