Officers from Shakespeare Sarani police station sought to serve the notice directing Banerjee

Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee

Officers from Shakespeare Sarani police station sought to serve the notice directing Banerjee to appear on Oct 9 for questioning. The dispute stems from an Aug 27 clash on Camac Street over removal of a political billboard from a building housing Banerjee’s office.

Police said staff at Banerjee’s residence declined to accept the document. Police said they would email notices to both politicians. They returned empty-handed after learning he was attending an INDIA bloc protest against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi. Shortly after, police visited the residence of former IPS officer and ex-MLA Humayun Kabir to serve a separate notice. Kabir, named as an accused in the case, was also summoned for questioning this week. Officers found his house locked and phone calls went unanswered. The MP’s supporters allegedly clashed with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) personnel and police. Amid the chaos, police forced their way onto the roof to dismantle the billboard carrying the party’s name and symbol, citing safety hazards and illegal installation. The clash resulted in three FIRs at Shakespeare Sarani police station.
