A senior police officer said, “Since the accused admitted to using the fake identity for over a year, we are trying to assess how many people he has defrauded. The accused, Tarun Das, was travelling to his residence in Sagardighi in an SUV fitted with a VIP hooter and a sticker identifying him as a Lieutenant Colonel. Police seized a fake Army identity card describing him as an officer in the Intelligence Wing. BSF intelligence inputs suggest Das was involved in an extortion racket targeting Army job aspirants. Police seized walkie-talkies, CVs, a mobile phone and academic certificate copies. Download the TOI App.
