Kolkata: “Jungle raj” had been established in Bengal since BJP came to office five months ago, said Mamata Trinamool Congress on Wednesday.
Citing an RTI reply, the party said 2,454 cases of rape had been lodged between June and Sept this year. Refuting the TMC charges, BJP said most of the cases were from before May 4, when TMC was in office. As many as 2,454 rape cases have been lodged. In addition, 600 murders and 13,114 cases of attempted murder were filed. Grievous hurt cases stood at 32,341.
Claiming that such a high crime rate was unheard of, Ghosh said, “Has anyone seen such records in India? The party also asked why the Bengal governor was not stepping in. Our former MP Saket Gokhale had filed an RTI on the crimes committed in Bengal in the last five months. This covers the months between June and Sept. The information has been shared by the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB). There is police raj and thousands of political activists are jailed. Yet crimes are rising. Is Lok Bhavan sleeping? The governor must act.”
At a news conference on Wednesday, Mamata TMC spokesperson and Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh said: “The five-month-old govt has created a jungle raj.
The rate was barely 2.5%.
Reacting to this, BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said, “The previous govt didn’t register rape cases. We registered cases of CPM workers and even TMC workers being attacked. ” He went on to say: “Anyone can access NCRB portal and get these details. It was you who said women should not travel after 8pm.
There was no data in the NCRB. After CM Suvendu Adhikari took oath, he gave an order – per Supreme Court ruling – that allowed any rape case to be registered late if it can be justified.
