Repairs carried out between spells of rain have been washed away in the past couple of days. Key arterial roads like E M Bypass, Park Circus connector, Chittaranjan Avenue, Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Road, Circular Garden Reach Road, and Diamond Harbour Road are among the worst affected. Commuters travelling along the stretch between Kasba and Science City get stuck in never-ending traffic snarls during peak hours as vehicles navigate uneven surfaces. The service road near PC Gardens is also being avoided by two-wheelers.

The roads department is concentrating on stretches that have ceased to be motorable, according to a KMC official. Amitava Chakraborty from Behala said, “Each day, the traffic snarl begins from the Majerhat Bridge approach near Taratala Mint and continues till Mominpore. Currently, amid incessant rain, KMC is sending its fleet of small road repair vehicles to fix potholes and craters, according to an KMC official.
A couple of intersections of D H Road — Mominpore and Taratala — need urgent intervention, conceded an official. This apart, roads in the port area are crying for repair, the official added. The KMChas taken up a borough-wise road repair scheme and kept ready teams accordingly. In the north, besides stretches of Chittaranjan Avenue, the civic body’s focus will be on Strand Road (close to Howrah bridge), Bidhan Sarani, APC Roy Road, AJC Bose Road, Amherst Street, MG Road, among others. Besides taking care of roads in the Behala-Tollygunge zone, the KMC will need to take up repair of a long stretch of Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Road that has become a death trap. “Daily commute has turned into an ordeal on SP Mukherjee Road. The KMC also needs to take up repair of road surfaces of several bridges and flyovers, including in Sealdah and Gariahat. Conditions are equally dire along Biren Roy Road (West), Motilal Gupta Road, and MG Road (South) in the Behala region. Residents and daily commuters note that these degraded stretches not only prolong travel time but also cause significant damage to vehicles. In the port area, heavy freight traffic and waterlogging have left Transport Depot Road and Taratala Road battered, along with the stretch between Kidderpore crossing and Remount Road. “We know that a challenging task of taking up repair of several major roads awaits us.
