Kolkata: Chancellor’s nominees across 31 universities have been asked to function independently towards the betterment of the academic environment of state universities, following a meeting held at Lok Bhavan on Wednesday. Apart from chancellor R N Ravi, the meeting was attended by higher education minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay, additional chief secretary of the higher education department Binod Kumar and other officials.

Sources said representatives were asked to be vigilant during the highest decision-making meetings and work towards maintaining the autonomy of their institutions. They were also asked to take a proactive approach to ensure the respective universities participate in various rankings and to keep an eye on whether NAAC accreditation is being performed according to schedule. They were also asked to monitor whether any political influence was disrupting the academic environment and, on finding anything, to report it to the chancellor’s office.
