Kolkata: The arrest of a Trinamool functionary in a 2023 case triggered protests outside Amherst Street Police Station on Friday, with the party alleging a targeting of its workers for pointing out administrative lacunae in the Chorbagan stampede. Sources said the arrest was linked to an Oct 2, 2023, case filed by a woman. The MG Road resident had alleged theft of private photographs from her mobile phone, attempts to extort Rs 20 lakh and property, and circulation of intimate images online. An FIR has been lodged against 12 individuals and their associates. Prime accused Shah Faisal Raza illegally accessed the complainant’s mobile phone without consent and copied private photos, videos and chat records involving her ex-husband, according to the 2023 complaint.
BJP workers staged a counter-protest and the party’s Baranagar MLA Sajal Ghosh said Kunal was trying to shield “anti-national” people. With TMC Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh leading a sit-in protest, BJP accused him of shielding an accused. He has been sent to police remand for five days. Ansari, interestingly, has not been named as a key conspirator in the case.
TMC worker Majid Ansari was arrested on Thursday night and produced before a court on Friday.
