State signs MoU with NBCC for city and riverfront revamp: Minister

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Kolkata: The state govt wants to undertake holistic development of the Hooghly riverfront stretch from Diamond Harbour to Esplanade with a possible metro alignment below the river, a highway, a walkway, a cycle track and overall development on the riverside.

Paul said the state govt wanted to develop both sides of the Hooghly river in a holistic manner. There are so many stakeholders like port authorities, PWD, transport, PWD and others,” Paul said. “Our aim is to develop international-standard infrastructure, taking the best practices of cities abroad like London, Bangkok and Singapore so that we can develop the cities in our own way,” Paul said.

“We want to do a Mumbai Marine Drive model for our own riverfront. I want a total holistic development of the river stretch from Diamond Harbour to Esplanade, if a metro is possible below the river, a four-lane highway over the river surface, a walkway, a cycle track for which we are already in touch with a Netherlands-based company, and overall riverfront development. We have shared the idea with the PMO.

The state urban development & municipal affairs department on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), with the objective of appointing it as the project management consultant for different development projects involving various ULBs and parastatal organisations, including KMC, HMC, BMC, CMC, Nabadwip Municipality, SUDA and KMDA, state UD&MA department minister Agnimitra Paul said.
