Territorial Army symposium at Dhono Dhanyo auditorium in Kolkata
Kolkata: From powered exoskeletons and pipeline robots to cyber warfare and the role of citizens in national security, Territorial Army (TA) showcased its expanding role beyond conventional military operations at a two-day symposium in Kolkata. The concluding day featured panel discussions, a keynote address, seven MoUs with partner institutions, the release of Territorial Army Song and felicitation of eminent personalities. Senior officers, including Maj Gen Sujeet Shivaji Patil, additional director general, Territorial Army, attended the programme. The symposium reinforced the message that national security in an era of evolving threats is a shared responsibility extending well beyond the battlefield.
CEO and co-founder Vimal Govind MK said the company’s journey began in 2015 with research into powered exoskeletons for soldiers, later adapting the technology for sanitation workers in hazardous confined spaces and mobility solutions for persons with disabilities. “This is a time when the entire nation has to come together and realise its shared responsibility towards ensuring that we all stand together irrespective of the domains that we are currently invested in,” he said. Co-founder and CTO Arpan Dolui said the platform could find applications in defence tunnels and critical infrastructure, besides oil and municipal sectors. He added that collective strength would help the country and armed forces protect the borders while strengthening internal security. The inaugural day focused on the evolution of TA and its role beyond conventional military duties, including governance, border infrastructure and protection of critical national assets. The symposium also highlighted India’s emerging defence technology ecosystem, with startups showcasing robotics, artificial intelligence, drones and cybersecurity solutions. Indrobotics Technologies Pvt Ltd displayed ‘Indrover’, a prototype designed to operate inside cylindrical pipelines and tunnels. The ‘Know Your Territorial Army’ Seminar and TA 2.0 Symposium, held at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium on Thursday and Friday, brought together senior military officers, industry leaders, academicians, innovators, students and NCC cadets to discuss the changing nature of national security and TA’s contribution to nation-building. A special ‘Cyber Warrior’ lecture introduced school students and NCC cadets to cybersecurity and emerging challenges in cyber warfare.
Chief of Staff, Eastern Command, Lt Gen Gambhir Singh, who attended as chief guest, described the symposium as “extremely time-relevant” and stressed the need for collective responsibility towards national security. Participants also visited an exhibition featuring TA units, industry partners and ethnic and regional pavilions.
