Kolkata : The state govt has designed a Rs 4,702 crore drainage project for Howrah and Bally and sent a “preliminary project report” to the Centre for its approval, sources in the state govt said.
Around 70% of the project cost will be funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the rest by the state, an official said. It will cover a 67 sq km area and cost Rs 4,702 crore. Sources said 16 new drainage pumping stations will be built and the capacity of existing pumping stations will be augmented.
The state cabinet has passed the proposal and sent it to the Centre’s department of economic affairs for approval,” said an official. Once the project is implemented, the entire drainage network at these two places will be covered,” said an engineer. The central govt’s approval is necessary as ADB usually routes any loan amount through it. “The project has been planned for the entire Howrah Municipal Corporation and Bally Municipality areas. KMDA has prepared the preliminary project report (PPR) and is now working on a detailed project report (DPR). “Howrah and Bally still have large areas with open drains. Dredging of canals is also a component of the project. A canal pumping station will be built at Najirganj, near Botanic Gardens. Waterbodies that have dried up or parts of which have been filled up will be cleared. Large parts of Howrah lack adequate drainage facilities and get inundated every monsoon.
