Ultadanga to VIP Road old Durgapur bridge being repaired
The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) conducted another round of patch work of the bridge carriageway in the weekend and have sent a Rs 1.1 crore proposal to the govt for conducting thorough repair work of the bridge carriageway after monsoon. A Rs 1.1 crore proposal has been placed to the govt for administrative approval,” said an official. The authorities have initiated the process to engage an agency and an estimate of around Rs 41 lakh has been estimated for the work.
Kolkata: Despite conducting urgent patch work a number of times, the 200 meter long Old Durgapur bridge connecting Ultadanga with VIP Road has been repeatedly riddled with potholes due to continuous rain and taking daily heavy vehicular traffic load to and from the city and the Kolkata airport on both ends, washing away the patched up portions in frequent intervals. Traffic congestion has been occurring on the city bound flank and on the flank entering VIP Road as vehicles were moving slow due to the potholes that had developed on the bridge‘s carriageway. “Due to incessant monsoon rains, bituminous work could not be taken. Patch work of the bridge’s carriageway was earlier conducted for two days in July and for five days in Aug with the police but the covered up spots again developed wear and tear due to continuous accumulation of water due to rains and the uninterrupted movement of heavy vehicles, officials said.

Motorists said that traffic snarls were occurring throughout the day and were aggravating during rush office hours. “The bridge’s carriageway is repeatedly getting damaged after patch repairs as vehicles have to move slow, resulting in traffic snarls,” said a motorist. Officials said that work is being done during night when traffic pressure is at its lowest. Patch work is being done using concrete paver blocks to cover the potholed spots on the bridge‘s carriageway,” said an official.
“Proper and thorough repair work of the bridge’s carriageway by peeling off the damaged bitumen layer and laying fresh bitumen macadam was required after the monsoon.
