The birth registers play a vital role in matching records before the civic staff at the birth certificate counters finally upload all birth-related documents on the state-run portal, according to a KMC health dept official. Without these registers, the birth certificate processing work gets hampered to an extent that the backlog is growing at a faster rate,” said the civic official. “Despite submitting birth-related documents of my son to obtain a digital certificate for passport renewal, I was asked to wait for a month or else pay Rs 10,000,” he alleged. “A section of staff in the KMC birth certificate wing will go on harassing citizens to earn easy money and the civic administration will sit silently,” he added.

Kolkata: At a time when the processing of documents submitted by the citizens to obtain copies of digital birth certificates is being hampered by malfunctioning of the state-run ‘Janmo Mrityu’ portal, a section of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials has been struggling to clear pending certificates for want of birth register books which lie with the cops at police stations. In Sept, cops had raided the KMC headquarters and borough offices and seized these birth register books following allegations of irregularities and mass distribution during the SIR exercise. The raids were also conducted at the civic headquarters and borough offices as part of a probe into alleged fake or non-genuine physical and digitised birth certificates. “We are helpless and can’t process birth-certificate-related applications as the cops are yet to hand over the birth registers to the KMC health dept. Apart from this handicap, clearing of the birth certificate backlog has been delayed as the state-run ‘Janmo Mrityu Tathya’ portal and the KMC application chatbot have suffered repeated malfunctions or suspensions. A KMC official conceded that the civic headquarters was getting flooded with complaints about unnecessary harassment in the name of submitting documents. Prabir Bose, a retired state govt employee from Dhakuria, complained about a KMC birth certificate wing clerk. Download the TOI App.
