Somayaji
The period falls in the second half of Bhadrapada and is observed across India, according to the Hindu lunar calendar. It is considered an important time to perform Mahalaya Shraddha for those who have passed away. Mahalaya Shraddha provides an opportunity to remember several generations of ancestors While regular Shraddha is generally performed for parents or particular family members on a specific day. The remembrance can extend beyond parents and grandparents to maternal and paternal relatives, including uncles and other family members. It can also include a spouse’s parents and relatives. Teachers, family gurus and friends who contributed to a person’s life can also be remembered. The tradition can even extend to animals such as cows and dogs, as well as people who served the family. Charity and service to others are also considered important. Providing food and clothes to those in need and undertaking community service are ways in which people observe the period. Remembering and expressing gratitude to those who have passed away is not limited to one community or region. Different religions and cultures have their own ways of remembering the departed. In the Hindu tradition, Mahalaya Paksha provides a dedicated period to remember ancestors and others who have contributed to one’s life, and to pray for the departed soul to attain moksha .
