The scale of the surrender wave itself is striking: since 2005, as many as 819 Maoists have surrendered before Gadchiroli Police. The rehabilitation drive’s more personal achievements were 46 mass weddings conducted for surrendered couples, while 96 former Maoists were placed in skill-training programmes or bagged jobs at Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited — trading combat fatigues for factory shifts and monthly pay cheques.
“Every surrendered rebel underwent a free medical screening by specialist teams, part of a wider health push under Operation Roshni, which has already run eye-care camps and reversal surgeries for cadres sterilised during their underground years,” said Ramesh. “Counselling for mental health, alongside yoga and meditation sessions, has been launched to help former fighters shed the psychological weight of their past and find their footing in the mainstream,” the SP said.

This week’s twin police camps at Aheri under the flagship rehabilitation drive, Project Sanjeevani, alone catered to 313 surrendered Maoists, who received a fresh set of identity documents — Aadhaar, e-Shram, Maha Sarathi, Ayushman Bharat and ABHA cards — along with rehabilitation fund cheques. “The camps mark one of the most visible pushes yet to turn former insurgents into civic life as the national deadline of March 31 having passed almost six months now,” said SP Gadchiroli M Ramesh. Speaking at the gathering, Ramesh said the force’s commitment to the all-round development of surrendered members remains unwavering, and called on them to use their skills to become self-reliant, live safely with their families, and step into the mainstream with dignity. Gadchiroli now offers a quieter, more human counter-narrative to the insurgency’s end — one measured less in commando operations and more in ID cards issued, families rebuilt, and livelihoods restored, said senior officials.
