Ballari cybercrime police have registered an FIR against an accountant and his wife

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Ballari : Ballari cybercrime police have registered an FIR against an accountant and his wife for allegedly cheating 13 city traders of Rs 40.6 lakh by creating fake GST records. The case against Praveen Kumar and Nirmaladevi was registered following a complaint by cloth trader Narpat Singh, 43, who runs a cut-piece shop in Ballari and is registered under GST. Between 2020-21 and 2025-26, Praveen allegedly opened ‘Shree Jee Traders’ in his wife’s name and obtained GST registration. This resulted in an additional tax burden of about Rs 5 lakh on Singh, according to the complaint. Police said the couple allegedly cheated 12 other traders similarly.

Singh had entrusted Praveen with maintaining his shop’s GST accounts and filing returns. The couple allegedly used Singh’s business records, bill books, input tax credit details, returns, invoices and tally data. They allegedly created fake electronic records by showing business-to-consumer sales as business-to-business transactions and inflated transactions against Singh’s business in bills uploaded to GST logins and portals.
