Referring to a govt letter dated Aug 29, the commissioner said the state govt had examined the issue and directed the corporation to proceed in accordance with a resolution passed by the Karnataka legislative assembly on March 23, 1988.
He said the govt had also enclosed the assembly proceedings, which recorded that the house had unanimously passed resolutions on two occasions calling for the full implementation of the Mahajan Commission award and urging the Centre to implement the report without delay. Belagavi : Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) Wednesday passed a resolution declaring Belagavi as an integral part of Karnataka , fulfilling a long-standing demand of Kannada organisations. The resolution was adopted without discussion amid objections from Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) members. Kannada organisations had been urging the civic body to pass the resolution for over five months. Listed at the end of the agenda, the subject was taken up during the evening session of the corporation meeting. Following the commissioner’s statement, mayor Preeti Kamkar declared that the resolution had been passed in accordance with the govt’s directions. The text of the resolution was not read out before its adoption.
Before the resolution was considered, BCC commissioner Kartik M informed the House about a communication received from the urban development department in response to the corporation’s query on the matter.

Responding to the objection, the mayor said the corporation was acting on directions issued by the state govt. The meeting concluded with the National Anthem immediately after the mayor’s ruling, leaving members no opportunity to debate the resolution. Download the TOI App.
MES member Ravi Salunkhe strongly opposed the move, arguing that it was inappropriate to take up the issue while the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute was pending before the Supreme Court .
