Bengaluru: Complaints about faulty streetlights have consistently been among the most common civic grievances received by Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). With a new technology-driven monitoring system being rolled out across the city, residents may no longer have to report every non-functional streetlight for officials to initiate repairs. GBA is introducing energy-efficient LED lights integrated with an Internet of Things (IoT)-based Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS), which will automatically detect faulty streetlights and alert maintenance teams. Five dedicated control rooms will monitor streetlight performance, electricity consumption and fault alerts through digital dashboards. The first was inaugurated in Jayanagar Friday by Bengaluru development minister Krishna Byre Gowda, along with Jayanagar MLA CK Ramamurthy.
Across Greater Bengaluru, the project covers 5,00,381 LED streetlights, including 3,02,919 newly-installed lights and 1,97,432 existing LED lights integrated with CCMS. A total of 24,677 CCMS units are being deployed. The project is expected to achieve energy savings of more than 54%. “The city used to incur an annual cost of around Rs 500 crore for operation and maintenance of streetlights. We expect to save around Rs 100-150 crore annually once the system is installed across the city,” Krishna Byre Gowda said. In Bengaluru south city corporation limits, the project covers 1,25,947 streetlights. Of these, 75,729 are newly installed LED lights, while 50,218 existing LED lights have been integrated with CCMS. The corporation has installed 5,223 CCMS units through three concessionaires. Each CCMS unit typically controls a group of around 40 streetlights.

By comparing expected and actual electricity consumption, it can detect abnormal drops that indicate one or more non-functional lights. GPS-based tracking will help maintenance teams locate the affected streetlights and carry out repairs. The system is preloaded with the expected electricity consumption of the connected lights and continuously compares it with actual consumption once the lights are switched on. If one or more lights fail, the resulting drop in power consumption triggers an alert on the central dashboard, identifying the affected group. This allows maintenance teams to locate the fault and initiate repairs without waiting for a complaint. Download the TOI App.
