Kalaburagi: Deputy commissioner Ikram Shariff inaugurated the ‘Kalaburagi Sports Habba-2026’ at Chandrashekhar Patil Stadium Friday, an event aimed at fostering a sports culture and promoting local talent.
The DC unveiled the tournament jersey, sponsored approximately Rs 12.50 lakh, and inaugurated the event by performing the opening serve for the first volleyball match.
Speaking earlier, the DC urged athletes to participate with true sportsmanship and said efforts would be made to include more sports in future editions. City police commissioner SD Sharanappa said the ‘Sports Habba’ would serve as a major platform to identify talent among local athletes and urged the youth to make the best use of it. Organised jointly by the department of youth empowerment and sports and Kalaburagi Next Foundation, the four-day event will feature seven sports.

Volleyball, badminton and table tennis matches will be held at Chandrashekhar Patil Stadium in collaboration with Bengaluru-based organisation Sprenjo and local sports associations. Cricket matches will take place on Govt Degree College premises, chess matches at MSI Pre-University College indoor stadium and football matches in Virendra Patil Layout. A cyclothon will be flagged off from Sri Sharanabasaveshwara Temple at 6am Sunday. The route will pass through Jagat Circle, Govt Museum, Kharge Petrol Pump Circle, Buddha Vihara, Kharge Petrol Pump Circle, Jayadeva Heart Hospital and Mini Vidhana Soudha before concluding at Champa Stadium. SP Adduru Srinivasulu, intelligence wing SP Swapnil Mane, zilla panchayat CEO Rahul Sankanur, city corporation commissioner Avinash Shinde, DCP Shalu and assistant commissioner Ritika Verma were present.
