Chitradurga : A Telangana man was allegedly duped of Rs 10 lakh by a man who befriended him six years ago while he was working as a paddy harvesting machine operator in the area, after promising to sell him gold at a throwaway price. Ramesh claimed his friend had 250 grams of gold bars and was willing to sell them cheaply, according to the complaint. To win Srinivas’s trust, Ramesh allegedly took him to Mogalahalli village in Molakalmuru taluk on Sept 18 and gave him two genuine gold bars. On Sept 26, Ramesh allegedly called Srinivas, asking him to bring Rs 10 lakh to Chinnahagari stream near Koradihalli village, close to Abenahalli in Nayakanahatti hobli. He allegedly handed over fake gold bars, claiming they weighed 250 grams, and took the cash.
After tests confirmed they were genuine, Srinivas agreed to the deal, police said.
The complainant, Bodiga Srinivas of Botlavanaparthi village in Peddapalli district, Telangana, told police that the accused, identified as Ramesh , contacted him on a mobile number he had obtained during Srinivas’s earlier visit to the village. Ramesh also allegedly took away Srinivas’s mobile phone. After returning to his village, Srinivas got the bars tested and discovered they were fake. He alleged that Ramesh and two others were involved in the fraud.
