Bengaluru: Diseases of the circulatory system continued to account for the largest share of medically certified deaths in Karnataka in 2025, while respiratory and kidney and urinary diseases together made up another quarter of such deaths, according to the state’s medical certification of cause of death (MCCD) report. Circulatory diseases accounted for 31.1% of the nearly 1.6 lakh medically certified deaths in 2025, up from 29.4% in 2024. Ischaemic heart disease was the largest contributor, accounting for 40.8% of deaths within the circulatory disease group and 12.7% of all medically certified deaths. Respiratory diseases were the second-largest cause group, accounting for 13.3% of medically certified deaths, marginally higher than the nearly 13.2% recorded in 2024. Kidney and urinary diseases, classified as diseases of the genitourinary system in the report, accounted for 11.8%, followed by cancer at 8.5% and digestive diseases at 7.4%. Together, the eight leading cause groups accounted for about 87.5% of medically certified deaths in 2025. The other major groups were injuries and other external causes at 5.5%, symptoms and ill-defined conditions at 4.9%, and infectious and parasitic diseases at 4.9%. Among people aged 70 and above, circulatory diseases accounted for 39.5% of deaths, followed by respiratory diseases at 17.3% and kidney and urinary diseases at 13.7%. Within the third group, renal failure accounted for 77.8% of deaths. They accounted for 31.6% of deaths among those aged 15-24 and 20.7% among those aged 25-34, according to the report. The report recorded nearly 1.6 lakh medically certified deaths in 2025, covering 28.2% of all registered deaths. The statistics also show a marked difference by age. Among younger adults, however, external causes assumed greater importance. It, however, cautioned that differences in the efficiency of medical certification across Karnataka meant the figures may not be fully representative of mortality across the entire population.
