The Bengaluru-Vijayawada greenfield national highway is being developed to improve connectivity between Andhra Pradesh and Bengaluru. The six-lane, access-controlled highway is part of Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-II. The wider corridor combines new greenfield construction with upgrades to existing highways.

The project aims to reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Vijayawada from the current 11–12 hours to nearly six hours, according to the first supplied article. The greenfield section spans approximately 342–343km, running from Kodikonda near the Andhra Pradesh-Karnataka border to Muppavaram near Addanki. The wider project is estimated to cover 518–624km, combining greenfield construction with brownfield upgrades. The supplied article estimates the overall project cost at Rs 19,200–19,320 crore. The greenfield section has been divided into 14 construction packages awarded to Megha Engineering & Infrastructures, KNR Constructions and Dilip Buildcon. In a January 2026 review, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to complete the overall Bengaluru-Kadapa-Vijayawada Economic Corridor by 2027. NHAI is preparing a detailed project report for upgrading a 90km stretch of NH-44 between Devanahalli in Karnataka and Kodikonda in Andhra Pradesh. The proposal involves expanding the existing highway into a 10-lane road with a six-lane main carriageway, with a cloverleaf interchange planned at Kodikonda to connect it to the greenfield expressway. The plan also includes 1.5-metre barriers along 12.5km and streetlights along around 12km between the trumpet interchange and Devanahalli. (All images used are representative pics generated using AI)
Construction includes earthwork, culverts, bridges and blacktop laying, with progress reported on the Narayanampet-Chandrasekharapuram and Polavaram-Marripadu stretches. An NHAI official estimated the journey would take around six to seven hours. The expressway is also intended to improve the movement of passengers and freight. The Prakasam stretch accounts for nearly 110km of the project. The alignment passes through Chandrasekharapuram, Kanigiri, Veligandla, Marripudi, Cheemakurthy, Thallur, Addanki, Kondepi and Panguluru mandals, with Podili and Kanigiri among the towns along the corridor. Work includes large-scale earthworks, embankment formation and asphalt laying, with a senior NHAI official quoted in the supplied article saying construction across packages had gained momentum.

The corridor passes through Guntur, Prakasam, Kurnool and Kadapa districts. The greenfield alignment is designed to bypass congested towns and existing highways, easing pressure on older routes. Once operational, the corridor is expected to improve the movement of agricultural produce, minerals and manufactured goods to markets in Vijayawada and Bengaluru, as well as east-coast ports.
