Dharwad : The presence of 14 candidates in the fray for the Karnataka Legislative Council election from the West Graduates’ constituency has complicated the calculations of the BJP and Congress , with independents threatening to cut into their vote share. Among them, R Kanthkumar, who led a major agitation by unemployed youths demanding recruitment to vacant govt posts, has emerged as a key factor in the contest.
With around 97,000 registered voters spread across Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttara Kannada districts, every vote could prove crucial. Of the 18 candidates who filed nominations, four withdrew, leaving 14 in the fray. Average turnout in the last three elections was around 62%.
Political parties had attempted to persuade candidates likely to split their support base to withdraw, as even a small shift in votes could influence the outcome in a constituency where polling percentages are relatively modest. Kanthkumar’s candidature has added a new dimension to the contest. As president of the All Karnataka Students’ Association, he has gained prominence among unemployed youths through protests demanding the filling of vacant government posts. The contest is significant for BJP candidate SV Sankanur, who is seeking a third consecutive term, and Congress candidate Mohan Limbikai, who hopes to regain the seat for his party. Both are campaigning on issues such as employment generation, transparency in recruitment, skill development, better salaries for temporary employees and restoration of the Old Pension Scheme.
