Mysuru: With Mysuru Dasara just days away, Mysuru Zoo has stepped up preparations to strengthen security and safety measures in anticipation of lakhs of visitors during the festivities. Zoo authorities have drawn up a comprehensive plan focusing on visitor safety, animal welfare and smoother movement on the premises. Additional staff will be deployed at entry gates, ticket counters and parking areas to prevent bottlenecks, while CCTV monitoring and public address systems will help officials respond quickly to any incident. To prevent untoward incidents involving pickpockets and strengthen security, authorities have asked the office of the city police commissioner to provide door frame detectors, bag scanners and hand-held metal detectors, in addition to deploying police for crowd and traffic management. The zoo has also appealed to the fire safety department to place its tenders.
The entry fee remains Rs 40 for primary school students, Rs 50 for high school students and teachers, and Rs 120 for other visitors. Executive director PV Anusha told TOI that the zoo has been making all necessary preparations for crowd management and the safety of both the public and wild animals, with enhanced safety measures in anticipation of lakhs of visitors, including foreigners, visiting the zoo during the festivities. The zoo has requested the health and family welfare department to set up first-aid counters with necessary staff at four locations on the premises to take care of visitors’ health. In addition to existing ticket counters, the zoo authorities have decided to open extra counters and make arrangements for easy entry and exit. High-resolution cameras will be deployed to closely monitor people’s movement, while volunteers will assist with crowd management this year. Except during the Covid pandemic, visitor numbers have increased at the zoo every year. As part of the preparations, the authority has also taken up minor civil repair works and painting, and is removing damaged, dried tree branches. It is keeping its reverse osmosis plant in good working condition to ensure safe drinking water and that toilets are clean and intact for visitors, besides giving its offices and enclosures a new look. The zoo has also decided to screen a documentary on the conservation of wild animals, flora and fauna at its open-air theatre and provide information on the features of Mysuru Zoo in Kannada and English.
