Residents hold protest alleging pollution

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Mangaluru: Residents held a protest in front of the Mangalore special economic zone (MSEZ) entrance on Tuesday, alleging chemical particles released from a plant last night fell over nearby residential areas, including houses, courtyards and drinking water wells.

Residents raised serious questions about public health and safety of drinking water in the surrounding areas. Furthermore, they complained about continuous high noise levels, particularly during night hours, emissions of smoke and dust, and the alleged discharge of contaminated wastewater into waterbodies connected to the Phalguni River. Despite bringing several complaints to the attention of the concerned departments and district administration, residents allege that no permanent solution has been implemented so far.

They demanded an official report identifying the exact chemical composition, toxicological properties and short-term as well as long-term health effects of the particles allegedly released from the plant.
