Udupi : Udupi Town police arrested two persons on Oct 26 in connection with an alleged extortion case in which a cooperative society employee was threatened and coerced into transferring Rs 42,97,350 over two years.

Police arrested Nagarathna H,42, and her colleague Hemanth Karkera,41, from Kempegowda bus stand and Basaveshwaranagar in Bengaluru, respectively. A court later remanded them in judicial custody.

The victim met Nagarathna, a native of Badabettu Henabere in Byndoor, through a matrimonial app between late 2023 and Jan 2024 while looking for a bride, according to the complaint.

She allegedly told him that she worked as a Kannada teacher in Basaveshwaranagar and initiated marriage discussions. The victim declined her proposal, saying he intended to marry within his caste. However, Nagarathna allegedly continued contacting him and sharing her personal difficulties. When the victim sought repayment, Nagarathna allegedly threatened to file a false case claiming they were in an illicit relationship. She also allegedly threatened to humiliate him at his workplace, accuse him of misappropriating the organisation’s funds and cheating people, and leave a false letter before setting herself on fire outside the organisation.

Police registered a case against Nagarathna, Hemanth, Pramod and Renuka under Sections 61(2), 316(2), 318(2), 308(2) and 308(6), read with Section 3(5), of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is under way.
