In a letter to the Kushtagi town municipal council, KUWSDB said water supply would remain suspended until the damaged pipeline is repaired. Bilagi said pipeline leakages would normally cause only brief interruptions in supply. “Even if there is leakage in the pipeline, the disruption may be only for a day,” he said, indicating that the pending payments are the primary reason behind the prolonged suspension.
Koppal: Pending payments to the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB) have emerged as the main reason behind the suspension of water supply to Kushtagi town from the Almatti reservoir from Thursday, after a contractor refused to repair a leaking main pipeline until outstanding maintenance bills are cleared. Consequently, KUWSDB has decided to halt water supply until the leakage is fixed and further losses are prevented. A proposal seeking approval for the payment has already been submitted to the district administration. The municipality is required to pay monthly charges to the KUWSDB sub-division for operating and maintaining the town’s water supply system. KUWSDB has repeatedly urged the municipality to clear the outstanding amount. Its decision to stop supply over the pipeline leak has brought the long-pending dues issue to the forefront and is being viewed as a strong warning over non-payment. The disruption has placed the municipality in a difficult position amid drought conditions. With groundwater levels in municipal borewells declining sharply, Kushtagi is heavily dependent on Krishna river water, making uninterrupted drinking water supply a major challenge for the civic body.
