NAVI MUMBAI: A 50-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was killed and three others, including an advocate and two women, were injured in a pile-up after a speeding car crashed into another car, which then rammed into the auto-rickshaw ahead near Agroli village in CBD-Belapur on Tuesday night. The accident occurred around 7.30pm on the railway bridge connecting Palm Beach Road. The CBD-Belapur police arrested the car driver, Abhiraj Kasare (21), a student and resident of Karanjade, New Panvel. The injured were advocate Sachin Paralkar (48), a resident of Lonavala, and Samidha Kashid (21) and Nidhi Lala (19), both residents of New Panvel.

Around 7.30pm, after crossing Agroli village, he was driving down the railway bridge in Sector 29 when Kasare’s allegedly speeding vehicle crashed into the rear of his car.
API Savita Mhaske said that, according to Paralkar’s complaint, he was driving his car towards Mahesh Hotel in CBD-Belapur along Palm Beach Road.

CBD-Belapur senior inspector Arun Pawar said Kasare underwent a medical examination at NMMC Hospital, Vashi, to determine whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol. The impact caused Paralkar to lose control of his car, which rammed into Kasbe’s moving auto-rickshaw ahead. The auto-rickshaw overturned and Kasbe sustained severe injuries to his head and other parts of the body. He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. Paralkar sustained an injury to his left calf, while the two women travelling in Kasare’s car suffered minor injuries. The collision severely damaged both cars and the auto-rickshaw. His blood test was negative for alcohol consumption. Police registered a case based on Paralkar’s complaint and invoked provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to causing death by negligence, rash or negligent driving on a public way and acts endangering life or personal safety. Relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act concerning dangerous driving were also invoked against Kasare. Download the TOI App.
