NAVI MUMBAI: In a major security lapse at Belapur Railway Protection Force (RPF), two women arrested for allegedly attempting to steal overhead electric wires from the Juinagar railway godown escaped from the lockup after midnight on September 28. As per the FIR registered by RPF sub-inspector Milap Parte (52) at Panvel GRP, a case was registered on September 24 under Section 3(a) of the Railway Property (Unauthorized Possession) Act, 1966, Amendment 2012, at Belapur railway police station. They were taken into custody and identified as Rupali Kailas Kurhade (30), from Jalna, and Shalibai Ashok Pawar (49), from Bhiwandi. They were arrested after an FIR was registered for attempted theft and produced before a CSMT court, which remanded them to police custody till September 30. Around 2am on September 28, when Bagre had gone to the toilet, the two women allegedly managed to open the lock by inserting their hands through the iron bars of the lockup and jerking it.

They were lodged in the lockup at Belapur RPF police station. Police suspect the lock may not have been secured properly. The women then reached the balcony at the rear end of the police station. They removed their sarees, tied one end to the generator on the balcony and climbed down before escaping.
