As Diwali shopping increases, DCP Atul Zende has assured Kalyan traders of minimal police disruption
They said a large number of Kalyan residents commute to Mumbai for work and return home late in the evening, resulting in a rush of customers at shops and showrooms after 8.30pm during the Diwali shopping season. The assurance came after a delegation led by Vimal Thakkar (Vasani), Kalyan city president of the Shiv Sena Traders’ Cell, met Zende and submitted a memorandum highlighting the difficulties traders faced due to restrictions on shop timings. Traders said they require an additional two to three hours after customers leave to arrange merchandise, replenish stocks, complete billing and accounts, and close their establishments. KALYAN: With Diwali shopping picking up in Kalyan, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Atul Zende assured traders that police personnel would be instructed not to cause unnecessary inconvenience to shopkeepers and showroom owners during the festive season. In the memorandum, traders pointed out that the growing influence of online shopping and a prolonged economic slowdown had already affected retail businesses. However, they alleged that police personnel and beat marshals often pressure them to shut shops during these activities, creating difficulties in managing their businesses. Thakkar requested the police to cooperate with traders, particularly during the final week of Diwali, and ensure that routine business activities are not unnecessarily disrupted. After hearing their concerns, Zende assured the delegation that appropriate instructions would be issued to the concerned personnel and that traders would not face such inconvenience.
