Pune: A 33-year-old IT engineer died by suicide after allegedly being pressured repeatedly by her husband to grant him a divorce so that he could remarry. The deceased woman was also allegedly harassed over transferring a flat in her husband’s name and pressured to bring money from her parental home.
The woman was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her flat in Keshavnagar, Mundhwa, on Sept 29, police said. Her 74-year-old father, a resident of Mundhwa, lodged a complaint at Mundhwa police station. The woman had allegedly been harassed by her in-laws over money since 2018, according to the police.
Because of harassment by her husband and in-laws and that they should be held responsible for her death, in the note, she stated that she was ending her life.
The techie was also told to bring money from her parental home repeatedly to repay a loan taken for her sister-in-law’s education. Senior inspector Smita Wasnik of the Mundhwa police said, “We found a note purportedly written by the deceased. Her sister-in-law was arrested in Andheri, Mumbai. She was allegedly pressured to arrange funds to buy a flat and transfer it in her husband’s name. Audio recordings of conversations between her and her husband were also found on her cellphone.”
The Mundhwa police on Monday registered a case of abetment to suicide against five members of her in-laws’ family — her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law and grandmother-in-law.
